He Long: Lead the Uprising and Follow the Party
贺龙在早期的革命实践中，他先后担任桑植县讨袁护国军总指挥、湘西护国军营长、靖国军团长、建国川军师长等职。
In his early revolutionary practices, He Long served as Commander-in-chief of Yuan's National Defense Army in Sangzhi County, Battalion Commander of Xiangxi National Defense Army, Head of Jingguo Army, and Division Commander of Jianguo Sichuan Army, etc.
在旧军队里，贺龙虽然顺利地从营长当到师长，但他没有看到中国的希望。1921年中国共产党的成立，给黑暗中的中国带来了光明。贺龙对党领导的工农运动抱有很高的期望，给予了热情的支持。
In the old army, although He Long was successfully promoted from battalion commander to division commander, he did not see the hope of China. The founding of the Communist Party of China in 1921 brought light to China in the dark. With high expectations for the party-led movement of workers and peasants, He Long gave it his enthusiastic support.
1926年8月，时任国民革命军第20军军长的贺龙向共产党员周逸群公开提出入党的申请。但鉴于当时中共有不能在友军内部吸收高级军官入党的规定，周逸群没有答应贺龙的请求。此后，贺龙一次又一次地提出入党申请，但都没得到批准。这一时期，各方势力竞相游说、拉�：亓�。蒋介石许诺让他做国民党中央委员和江西省主席，并赠送一栋豪华大洋楼，对此，贺龙断然拒绝。
In August 1926, He Long, then the commander of the 20th army of the National Revolutionary Army, openly applied to Zhou Yiqun for a membership of the Communist Party. However, Zhou Yiqun did not agree to his request in view of the fact that the Chinese Communist Party was not allowed to recruit senior officers into the party within the friendly forces at that time. Since then, He Long had applied to join the party again and again, but none of them had been approved. During this period, various forces competed to lobby and draw him over. Chiang Kai-shek promised to make He Long a member of the Central Committee of the Kuomintang and Chairman of Jiangxi Province, as well as present him with a grand house, which he flatly refused.

1927年8月，中共中央决定在南昌发动武装起义。起义前夕，中共临时政治局委员谭平山会见贺龙，通报了中央希望他率领部队参加起义的决定。贺龙表示完全听从共产党的指示，并同意担任起义军总指挥。
In August 1927, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China decided to launch an armed uprising in Nanchang. On the eve of the uprising, Tan Pingshan, a member of the Provisional Political Bureau of the CPC, met with He Long and informed him of the Central Committee's decision to hope that he would lead his troops to participate in the uprising. He Long indicated that he fully obeyed the instruction of the Communist Party and agreed to serve as the commander-in-chief of the uprising force.
8月底，就在南昌起义军南下的途中，经周逸群和谭平山的介绍，贺龙正式加入了中国共产党。周恩来在贺龙的入党宣誓仪式上说：“组织上对贺龙很了解。多年来，贺龙同志积极追求真理，是经过考验的，是信得过的。”
At the end of August, on Nanchang Uprising Army’s way down to the south, introduced by Zhou Yiqun and Tan Pingshan, He Long officially joined the Communist Party of China. Zhou Enlai said at He Long's party oath ceremony:“The organization knows He Long very well. Over the years, Comrade He Long has been actively pursuing the truth, well-tested and trustworthy.”
