讲座内容简介:
In this presentation, I will first talk about how Chinese refer to themselves as single-authors in academic writing, based on a paper that was published in Journal of English for Academic Purposes (JEAP). Evidence will be provided that Chinese-speaking authors neither writing in English are like neither English (e.g. In this paper, I argue that…”) nor Chinese (“我们提出…”) academic writers. Instead, they use both I and other NPs that are not I(e.g. “In this paper, I/we argue that…,” “The/this author/researcher argues that…” or “This paper/research argues that…”).In addition, they differ in the degree to which they choose such in-between linguistic behavior depending on where they are in their academic career (e.g., as bachelor’s thesis writers, as master’s thesis writers, as doctoral dissertation writers, or as conference abstract writers).
Secondly, I will use the above talk as a springboard to a discussion on research and publishing. The JEAP paper has to do with academic writing rely heavily on the work done by students and faculty at XISU, and its publication went through a process that lasted several years. These aspects of the paper offer an interesting peek at what might happen behind the scenes in the birth—so to speak—of an academic publication.
